Georgian Bay Get Outdoors - Phragmites Grass ProjectPhragmites is a clonal grass species with woody, hollow culms which can grow up to 6 meters high in dense stands and is long-lived. The invasion alters the structure and function of diverse marsh ecosystems by changing species composition, nutrient cycles and hydrological regimes. Phragmites becomes very dense and can decrease native biodiversity and quality of wetland habitat, particularly for migrating waders and waterfowl species. Eighteen Georgian Bay Get Outdoors youth and parents gathered together to cut the stalks and dig out roots and rhizomes along the trail system. Over a four hour period, we worked hard to remove this plant and it was both amazing and rewarding to see the difference we had made when we were finished.
